Below are some common FAQs about getting your book published. If you have any questions not listed here, contact me.
What makes Big Moose Publishing different?
Many self-publishing companies still take a cut of the author’s royalties and charge a premium to order books. Big Moose Publishing does not. You get maximum profits off the sale of your book and you can order books at cost without needing a minimum number. We also are very hands-on with our authors through the publishing process so that your publishing experience goes smoothly and efficiently. You are never left guessing how to handle something and, in fact, most things are handled for you. We make it as easy as possible. You also become part of the Big Moose Author’s Den which is a Facebook community where information is shared regarding marketing, sales, and anything else. It’s a fun group where we can support each other and share ideas.
With regards to audiobooks, even though you do the majority of the work yourself, you are supported with hands on support every step of the way as well. The package includes ample support time and clear instruction to make things easy and efficient for you.
How long does it take to publish my book?
A lot faster than you may think. If your manuscript is polished and ready to go, often it will take less than 3 months to have it in hand. The faster you provide Big Moose Publishing with information it requires to format your book, the faster things happen. It really depends on how quickly you complete the required steps in your publishing journey. Usually it goes quite quickly.
It is difficult to determine the amount of time it will take to produce an audiobook. It all depends on how long your book is and how much time you can commit daily to the process. Once files are uploaded, it can take up to 30 days for your files to be approved assuming there are no errors or issues to address.
I’ve written my book. What else do I need to do?
There are a lot of little steps you might not realize that need completing. Have you written your dedication page, acknowledgments page, and an about the author page? Do you have a print ready author photo in 300 (or higher) dpi? Do you have your short author biography ready for the back cover? Have you written your book description for the back cover? Do you have any ideas what you would like your book cover to look like? What do you wish the interior of your book to look like? All of these things need to be need to be addressed. Do not get overwhelmed. Most of it happens quickly and seamlessly. These are just things for you to think about and can affect the timeline of your book coming out if not completed in a timely manner.
Do I need to have my book edited?
Yes. You don’t need to have it edited by Big Moose Publishing but by someone professional. This means not your best friend or your brother-in-law. Big Moose will recommend editing if your manuscript is not in form for publishing. We will also give a sample edit on a few pages if you like to show you what you may require. This is your voice going out into the world. You want it to be clear, concise, and readable without a ton of grammatical mistakes. We can not in good faith publish a manuscript that is full of mistakes. It looks badly on both you and us.
Do I still have ownership of my book if I sign with Big Moose Publishing?
Yes. You maintain 100% of the property rights. If you get a publishing house contract after your book is published with Big Moose Publishing, you are free to have your book published under a different imprint. Our aim is to give you freedom and flexibility with your book.
You, actually, are the publisher for audiobooks. Big Moose Publishing is your support through the process.
How do I get paid royalties?
Royalties will come to you paid by KDP Amazon or IngramSpark for print books and by ACX for audiobooks. Big Moose Publishing will not take any cut of your royalties. We are in the business of getting your book out there, and that’s all. We want your voice to be heard. We want for you to reap the rewards of each sale of your book.
Royalties for print and ebooks are a calculation of the cost of producing and delivering the book, minus the sale. As a rule of thumb, an average paperback black and white interior book of 230 pages priced at $18 USD will earn you a royalty of approximately $7 USD. Big Moose Publishing does not set these prices. These prices are determined by the sales channel (such as amazon). Again this is an example and Big Moose Publishing in no way determines or promises the amount of your royalties.
Royalties are paid once a quarter. All royalties are handled from your publishing account, paid directly to you, and not with Big Moose Publishing.
Can I order books at cost?
Yes! A great way to make a higher profit on your books is to sell them yourself. For example, the editor ordered 25 copies of a 247 page paperback and with shipping it totalled, $203.00 in CAD. That’s only $8.12 CAD. A book with less pages costs less and a book with more pages costs more.
Do I have to order a minimum amount of books?
No. You can order them one a time if you wish. They are the same price either way. Shipping is the only price that varies depending on the number of books you order.
If I get lost in the process, is help available?
Big Moose Publishing’s aim is for you NEVER to feel lost. We are right with you every step of the way and do the bulk of the work for you. We walk you through the entire process.
Why publish?
You have a voice and a story that makes a difference in the world. Your book is a tool to grow your business. Being an author gives you credibility and a unique way to let people know about you and what you do. There is something very satisfying about being a published author – as it should be. You dared to write down your story and share it with the world. That is an amazing gift.
Why self-publish?
The reality is that unless you have a massive following or are famous and are guaranteed to sell a large number of books, most traditional publishers will not even consider you. In order to get a traditional publishing contract, you most often need a literary agent who needs to get paid. If you do manage to land a publishing contract, many of your profits are eaten up paying your literary agent, 50% of royalties to the publishing house, plus you will pay a premium to order your own books to have in stock to sell to your own customers. Because of this, even those with large followings are choosing self-publishing because they maintain all rights to their book, need no literary agent, gain 100% of the royalties, and get to order their books at cost.
With Big Moose Publishing you maintain all rights to your book, need no literary agent, gain 100% of the royalties, and get to order your books at cost without needing a minimum number to order.
Will my book be online?
Big Moose Publishing creates a paperback and e-book for you (unless you just want one of those). It is distributed worldwide through all amazon channels and many other ebook channels worldwide.
Do I need to publish an audiobook?
No, but there are benefits to publishing an audiobook. Audiobooks are the fastest growing area in book sales. Not all print and ebooks are audiobooks which means a lot less competition in your genre. Trust your gut. Ask yourself if publishing an audiobook would be a contribution to your business and to others. You will know.
